Summary
There’s an awful lot of stimuli and noise out there these days. If you aren’t deliberate about where you allow your thoughts to focus, you may easily find that you have strayed away from your core goals.
The good news is that there is a very effective tool you can leverage to help yourself actually re-train your brain to focus in on what really counts. After all, you can’t neglect your mind muscle any more than you can ignore strength training in the rest of your body.

Whenever I speak with different groups, I am often asked how am I able to get so much accomplished in a day and how I became so successful.
I wish I had some secret sauce that I could bottle and trademark as my own. But it is much simpler than that if I am being honest. In a word, it’s “focus.”
It is simple, but it’s not necessarily easy by any stretch. Today there are more distractions and demands on your time than probably any other point in history thanks to technology. It won’t just happen. You truly need to implement a process in order to stay focused.
I personally like to systemize and create processes for most of what I do. I have learned through time and experience that it makes following through on my goals much easier.
I think of it as similar to when I baking a cake in the kitchen. With nothing but ingredients laid out before me on the counter, I wouldn’t get very far. But if I have the recipe, I can follow it and get the soft, sweet end result I am after. The same is just as true for staying focused on and accomplishing goals, both daily and long term.
I tend to break my goals down into bite sized bits. This prevents me from becoming overwhelmed when I set my mind to a large goal, like becoming a millionaire or starting a business.
The Power of PPM’s
I also create what I call PPMs around each of my objectives. That stands for “Personal Programing Messages.“ They are an invaluable tool for helping to prevent negative thoughts from getting into your head and holding you back from making progress on what you want to achieve.
Using PPMs has paid big dividends for me over many years.
I am consciously reminding myself what it is that I want out of my life. We take in a lot of stimuli each day and it is rather easy to lose track of your priorities in the midst of all the noise. This tool lets me cut through all of the distractions and re-focus myself on what I really want to get out of the day.
Moreover, I am actually reprogramming my thinking, recalibrating my thoughts to accomplish the goals I have laid out for myself.
It is when your subconscious and conscious minds are aligned, that you can really fulfill your true potential. This state of alignment can allow you to attain pure focus.
My area of expertise is business of course, but this strategy can be of enormous power for just about anyone who has to perform under pressure, which is just about all us at some point. Whether you are running in a race or conducting an orchestra or leading a conference call, we can all stand to gain from strategies that allow ourselves to fully be present in the moment.
Whether you are overtly aware of it or not, your subconscious is being programmed by forces everyday. The only question you need to ask yourself is whether you are letting those stray external forces guide your thoughts or whether you are doing it on
Your subconscious is being programed every day, the only question is whether you are letting external forces program it, or if you are doing it on purpose. “If you don’t control your programing, your programing will control you.”
What’s Your Mantra?
This technique can be invaluable in helping you to keep particular mantras in your mind. Steve Jobs, for one example, consistently stuck to a simple mantra that he told himself throughout his life. His mantra was “focus and simplicity”. He repeated the terms enough so that they naturally instilled themselves in his subconscious and touched everything he worked on. You see how that simplicity and focus lent itself to Apple only tackling a few key projects during his second iconic tenure as CEO, down dramatically from the hodgepodge of distractions that the company had unsuccessfully pursued in the past. That ethos began in the mantra that he told himself each day.
It makes sense, right? If you wake up each day and go to bed each night with an easy to remember mantra ringing in your head, it is going to stick with you throughout the rest of the day. It might be, “speed is everything” if you are a runner. It might be “simplify, simplify” if you are looking to downsize your possession and streamline your life a bit. It might be “one page at a time” if you are a writer focused on completing a book. Regardless of what your mantra is, it begins with honing in on the key to what you want to achieve and then weaving that mantra into the tapestry of your life through the power of repetition.
Another entrepreneur who has used the power of mantras is Adam Braun, who left a high-paying but constricting job in consulting at Bain to pursue his passion for education and social entrepreneurship. Adam launched Pencils of Promise, a global NGO that builds schools throughout the developing world. It expands education to countless children. Adam began the organization with only $25 in his bank account. In just over five years he succeeded in building over 200 schools throughout the world, drawing upon his experiences in business. But Adam also draws a line between his success and his use of mantras. He has shared more than 30 mantras that have helped guide him and keep him focused. Mantras like, “Know that you have a purpose” and “Get out of your comfort zone.”
The same messages won’t work for everyone, because we all have our own unique areas of focus and goals we are striving for. By reminding yourself of what you want to achieve and using the power of tools like PPMs to rewire your brain, you can accomplish more than you possibly imagine.
Make it as simple on yourself as possible. Focusing on a number of subjects or goals at the same time can make you scatter brained and lead you away from focusing on a core achievement. Stay focused on your most important goals at this tie. Ask yourself today, what do you want to change in your life? And what message are you most in need of reminding yourself when things get tough? You can then detect the subconscious habits and thoughts that are stopping you from advancing.
