Seinfeld’s George Costanza is a prime example of how NOT to live your life.
One day, he was eating lunch with some execs from the NY Mets.
Of course, George worked for cross-town rival, the Yankees. How he actually kept his job is an unknown miracle.
League rules don’t allow for a team to approach the member of another team while still under contract. The inference that wasn’t allowed to be said, but was, was that the Mets wanted to hire George as their head of scouting.
Wink, wink. Nod, nod.
George loved the idea of making the move to the Mets. So, he told Jerry he was setting out to get fired from his job with the Yankees.
His masterful plan involved raiding the Yankee’s museum.
He pulled out Babe Ruth’s (priceless) uniform and wore it to a meeting with team owner, George Steinbrenner.
During the meeting, Costanza was eating a jelly donut as only he can, slopping the jelly on the uniform and wiping his sticky hands on the prize museum piece, making a total mess.
And as it was jelly, very probably permanently staining and damaging the uniform.
George clearly had gone off the deep-end.
But instead of Steinbrenner getting mad, he praised George for his thinking that these old uniforms should be worn and enjoyed .
I love how they played Steinbrenner on Seinfeld, which based on reports, is the complete opposite of who he really was.
Steinbrenner himself got the uniform of another great, Mickey Mantle, from the museum. Although he was a little concerned of how it fit, he was enjoying wearing it and thought George was “really onto something.”
George continued to attempt to get fired until his immediate boss announced he was moving to the Mets at that prize position, head of scouting.
George is so bad at managing his life that he can’t even get fired when trying to.
But…
You don’t need to go to extremes to be fired. Instead, I suggest that you have a plan to fire your boss.
But only when you’re ready and on your own terms.
