I zigged, when I should have zagged.
Or to be more clear, my mistake cost me time and money. But it’s OK!
A number of years ago when I was looking to add to my online business portfolio and start another business, I began investigating “affiliate marketing.” (Affiliate marketing is marketing other people’s products, so you don’t need to create them.)
Over the course of my investigation, it was clear that affiliate marketing was not only viable, it was the perfect way to add another online business to my company. There were no products I needed to create.
There are several types of affiliate marketing, but for the purposes of my story, I’m going to categorize them into two types, based on the commissions you receive for selling a product.
I’ll call them “high-ticket” and “low-ticket” opportunities.
My discussions with “experts” in the areas I was focusing on came down to the “platform” I would use to market the products.
This was when the adoption of buying something on your cell phone was just starting and you were able to charge the purchase to your cell phone bill. People were fascinated with installing game and security apps on their new smart phone.
My decision was between marketing online educational products to entrepreneurs and business owners, where I’d receive hundreds to thousands of dollars per sale or market apps and other products people would load onto their phone.
I would make thirty cents to two dollars per “sale,” in this case. (On average about 50 cents.)
I would need to have thousands of installs a month to make any money, but the market was the entire burgeoning world in the new era of the smart phone. People everywhere were going crazy about all these new things their phones could do.
As you might have guessed, I went with marketing apps and mobile content services.
I paid an expert consultant, $30,000 to quickly train me and my star assistant to get us up to speed and profitable quickly. He was to also give us access to his best contacts so we were working directly with the creators of the products, which he did. I got the expected value for the money I paid.
I was marketing in India, Middle East, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil and many more countries, just to name a few of the 15 or 20 countries I was marketing to.
I was selling thousands a month and doing OK.
For a while.
What I hadn’t anticipated, was the degree of changing regulation that would quickly change the landscape in each country. The carriers, (cell phone companies) began to make it very difficult to market to people.
And in many cases for good reason. There were some bad apples in the business using deceptive and unscrupulous methods. (I stayed well away from those practices)
What was, in the early days, a decent business model quickly became onerous and impossible to do business in unless you owned your own offers.
Even working directly with the producers of the apps and content provides, like I was, wasn’t enough.
So a number of months back now, I shut that business down.
However, there’s a silver lining to this story.
During that time, I also kept my eye on the “high-ticket,” online educational arena.
There are a couple of companies in the realm, but there’s one that stood out head and shoulders above the rest.
Their goal of this company, (which I have partnered with), is to be the “go-to” online-training-company for businesses and entrepreneurs around the world. This is and will be the place to get the quality training they need to excel in building their business, whether it’s brick and mortar or online!
If I hadn’t spent all that time in the mobile, “low-ticket” arena, I might not fully understand the significance of what I’m doing now. Or how much impact I can have in helping people with products they really need if they want to succeed online or in business.
For that, I’m very grateful I made the mistake I made.
That said, I wish I had been building this business instead.
