Sheldon Cooper, the uber-nerd genius on the great sitcom series The Big Bang Theory is brilliant, to say the least.
Not just his character, but also the way he is played by actor Jim Parsons.
Sheldon’s brilliance is without question, but he is often too literal.
He doesn’t understand sarcasm because he’s analyzing the literal meaning of figurative language; and doesn’t understand popular culture. Not a good combination.
We’ve seen Sheldon’s hilarious attempts to use and/or understand sarcasm over many seasons. Of course, he usually fails miserably by pointing out the sarcastic comment to the people around him.
But, he is trying. He’s practicing.
His lack of communication skills doesn’t stop with sarcasm, though.
He’s awkward in almost all social situations and he doesn’t understand or communicate with women well. Even his girlfriend Amy.
He’s successful in his lab environment, but fails outside of it – spectacularly and often.
For one main reason…
His lack of ability to communicate.
I see this same affliction, if we can call that, inhibit so many people. They’re stuck or fail in so many areas of life, simply due to their lack of communication skills. Many people even fail to advance in their 9-5 job simply because they can’t communicate well.
The good news for Sheldon, but more importantly you, is that with some practice you can overcome this detriment.
It will take some practice.
