As chauffers to our kids – like pretty much every parent – we often had them captive in the car…
Sometimes for extended periods of time.
They didn’t have devices to tune us out.
This was a several years ago, but I still don’t think I’d want the kids drowning us out on their latest electronic devices, even if they had them …
Or…
Be watching a movie on the screen in the back of the seat in front of them.
I know a lot of their friends did this as they got a little older; however, we resisted the temptation quite well.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging anyone else here.
As active parents, we all use the best methods at hand to maintain sanity in the house or in this case, the car.
But we did this on purpose.
We’d use these moments of “imprisonment” as teaching opportunities.
Not direct teaching.
Indirect.
How?
We might talk about some current affair that was “hot” news in a way that gave our views of the story.
Or, we weren’t talking to the kids.
It was my wife and me talking with each other.
But the kids had nothing else to do but listen, even if they were staring out the window.
We would engage them if we wanted an opinion, but not always.
And you know what?
Years later they had and have their own views.
However, their slant seems to have the undertone and elements from the wisdom of their parents.
Nice!
And as you likely know, a rebellious teenager will tell you “you know nothing”, if you attempt to “tell” them anything directly.
But their job is to push the envelope and I’m OK with that.
So were we brainwashing our kids?
I would argue, not. (OK, maybe a little, but in a good way.)
We were simply stating our opinion. They later got to decide, after being indoctrinated, if they agreed or not.
And it worked.
They’re both great kids.
Young adults now.
